Ruth Todd Evans, author and illustrator of The Panda Who Would Not Eat, will sign copies of her delightful children's story book at the annual "Garden of Lights" celebration at Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas. The Panda Who Would Not Eat is based on the true story of Shi Shi, the first male panda bear in the San Diego Zoo's Giant Panda Conservation Program, who didn't like the food that he was given at the Zoo.

Author and photographer Ernie Cowan will preview his new book, Anza-Borrego: A Photographic Journey. Cowan captures the essence of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in stunning images that reflect the spirit of the land and in heartfelt words that express why this land touches so many people in a speical way.

Dr. Paul Bernstein will speak about the history behind his new novel, Courage to Heal. It is based on the true story of Dr. Sidney Garfield who, along with industrialist Henry Kaiser, created the first true health care system in the Richmond shipyards during WWII and changed the face of American medicine forever. History is brought to vivid life in this novel of an intransigent physician, his fight to provide health care to all, and his love for a beautiful nurse who marries the man determined to defeat him.

Bruce Berger, author of Oasis of Stone: Visions of Baja California Sur will speak about this landmark pictorial, which features the photography of Miguel Ángel de le Cueva, at the San Felipe Title Company in San Felipe, Baja Mexico. Gorgeous full-color photography, and evocative text by Bruce, bring the southern half of Baja California to life. Beginning with its unique geology and moving on to the coastal, desert, and mountain ecosystems of Mexico’s little-known peninsula, this lushly decorated coffee-table book highlights the flora and fauna of the region.

The story of Anza-Borrego is a story of visionaries in the midst of challenges, of conservationists prevailing in the face of development, and of the ongoing vigilance needed to protect one of the nation’s finest and largest desert parks. Celebrate the park’s 75th anniversary by reliving the past as
historian Diana Lindsay recounts the critical events that created this world-class park in this lecture and slideshow at the Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center.
