What do you do... when your panda won’t eat his bamboo?!
The Panda Who Would Not Eat written and illustrated by Ruth Todd Evans 32 pages, paperback ISBN 978-0-932653-84-0 $9.95
The first male panda bear in the San Diego Zoo’s Giant Panda Conservation program had a problem—he didn’t like the food he was given at the Zoo. Shi Shi, the picky panda, didn’t like the bamboo grown at the zoo and preferred one species of bamboo which grows at Quail Botanical Gardens in nearby Encinitas, California.
This delightful story book, written for pre-school age children by Ruth Todd Evans, M.D., and accompanied by her charming watercolor-and-pen illustrations, is based on the true story of how Shi Shi’s problem was finally solved.
Published in cooperation with the San Diego Zoo and Quail Botanical Gardens, a portion of the proceeds from this book will benefit the Giant Panda Conservation Program and the new Children’s Garden at Quail Botanical Gardens.

THE SUNBELT PUBLICATIONS STORY
It all began in 1983 at the historic Scholtz Beergarten in Austin, Texas. Authors Diana and Lowell Lindsay were frustrated over the problem of distribution for their natural history and guide books. They decided to become specialty distributors themselves, with a publishing program that would feed into that system. On a cocktail napkin, they sketched a logo for this new company based on the New Mexico Zia sun symbol with "SB" in the center representing the southwest "Sunbelt" states that the company would serve.
In November 1984, the Lindsays acted on this idea when Diana took her small stock of books in her VW van and visited her first customer in San Diego’s backcountry. By 1986, she was supplying regional books to the major bookstore chains in southern California. Lowell officially joined the business in 1989 and in 1995 the company moved into a 22,000 square foot warehouse in El Cajon, California, which is where you’ll find us today.
Sunbelt now services more than 1,000 customers, mostly in southern California and Baja California, with 2,500 regional books and maps from approximately 150 publishers while our award-winning publishing program produces 5-10 new titles per year. We have come a long way in the 20 years since the idea of Sunbelt first emerged from doodles on a napkin, and the dream of publishing great books that could feed into an established distribution system is now a reality.
